Saturday, June 2, 2012 - RYAN COOK & MARY STEWART ($10 Show 9:00 PM)

An award-winning singer-songwriter from Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Ryan Cook has been broadcasting his songs and stories to varied audiences of roots, folk, and Country/Western music since 2007. Across Canada and beyond, Ryan has been a breath of fresh air on radio airwaves, blending the nostalgia of classic country with the satire of a modern troubadour.

In college, Ryan worked part-time at a retirement home where he began taking requests to play traditional Country music and soon found himself falling for the sounds of Hank Williams, Roger Miller and Tom T. Hall. In 2008, Ryan entered the studio with his then touring band, Sunny Acres, and released the debut LP Hot Times. The record won a Music Nova Scotia Country/Bluegrass Recording of the Year award, was nominated for an East Coast Music Award and named the 8th Best Canadian Country Album of 2008 by Country Music News.

In 2009, Ryan was invited to Nashville, TN to record his sophomore album with Music City Roots producer John Walker. The result, Peaks and Valleys, featured some of Nashville's most prolific players past and present including Lloyd Green, Andy Leftwich, and multiple Grammy-winning artist, Alison Brown. The album was hailed by many critics as one of the most refreshing country/western albums of 2010 including Maverick Magazine, Country Music News, Exclaim, Now Toronto, and The Coast. Peaks & Valleys received six nominations in Atlantic Canada from both Music Nova Scotia and the East Coast Music Association. The album took home the Country/Bluegrass Recording of the Year from Music Nova Scotia and received top honours with Country Music News as the 2010 Album of the Year from editor Larry Delaney's year-end review.

Above all else, Ryan Cook is an entertainer. Having performed over 600 shows since 2007, Ryan has the natural ability to charm audiences with his offbeat songs and engaging narratives. He has shared the stage with country greats Dwight Yoakam, Rosanne Cash, and Sammy Kershaw as well as celebrated songwriters like Steve Poltz, Brandi Carlile, and Joel Plaskett. In 2011, Ryan accompanied Travis Tritt as the opening act on his 2011 Maritime Acoustic Tour in Canada. Ryan Cook has showcased in Nashville, TN at both Music City Roots and the Ernest Tubb Midnight Jamboree and performed over 30 theatre shows as Hank Williams in the Maynard Collins play The Show He Never Gave. On the heels of Peaks & Valleys, Ryan is travelling near and far charming audiences, winning hearts, and subtly converting those who claim to enjoy "any type of music except country." ryancook.

Winner of the 2008 & 2011 Music Nova Scotia Awards -Country/Bluegrass Recording of the Year and winner of the 2008- Rodeo Idol Songwriting Competition

"From Cowboy songs and country swing with a dash of Bakersfield, Cook's feet seem firmly planted in real life. As a result, you'll find far more peaks than valleys here and the view looks truly promising."  Maverick Magazine, 4 ****

"Nothing short of spectacular...A terrific album that every fan of 'good' music should get to hear."  Country Music News (2010)

Mary Stewart

Growing up around a staggering record collection Mary developed an appreciation for music at an early age. By the time she was sixteen, Mary was in the studio with producer/songwriter George Canyon recording her first EP.

Since this time she has shared the stage with such performers as Cindy Church, Murray McLaughlin, Bruce Guthro, Jill Barber, In-flight Safety, and Wintersleep. In May 2009 Mary independently released her full length record "Mary Stewart" which was nominated for 2009 Best Female Artist Recording with Molson Nova Scotia

Friday, June 8, 2012 -CATHERINE MacLELLAN ($12 advance / $15)

We are excited to have Catherine MacLellan back at Vintage Bistro...introducing her new album Silhouette.  Launched to acclaim, the record captures her best qualities effortlessly stitching together elegantly woven songs with her memorable blend of heartfelt and powerfully introspective lyrics and catchy melodies.

A particularly sweet note on Silhoutette is Catherine's stripped down cover version of  "Snowbird", the most lauded song ever written by her father Gene MacLellan.  Featuring Canadian icon Jim Cuddy (of Blue Rodeo), it's a meaningful acoustic tribute to the elder MacLellan's songwriting legacy, and fan favourite re-imagined by Catherine in a whole new light.

Recorded largely at a secluded cabin in rural Prince Edward Island, MacLellan brought together a band of longtime friends and musical collaborators with producer David Baxter to craft the 14-track album that Canada's Exclaim! Magazine has touted as being "a near-hour-long album devoid of filler...a testimony to MacLellan's ascent to greatness." Indeed, the subtle yet steadfast strength of the album is undoubtedly the understated power of MacLellan's songwriting and performance on the largely acoustic-driven songs.

MacLellan's star has long been rising in North America. Voted Critics Favourite New Discovery by Penguin Eggs Magazine in 2008, her last record Water In The Ground reached out to expand her already loyal fan base as she toured in support of legendary artists including Bruce Cockburn in the United States and Steve Forbert in the UK, while also holding her own by showcasing in Boston, Berlin, Cannes, Memphis, New York, London, and Paris. Her previous albums have collectively hit #1 on the iTunes Canada Roots charts, and been acclaimed by tastemakers at Maverick Magazine, fRoots, The Austin Chronicle, and Boston Globe.

Like the person in the room who demonstrates his or her commanding presence without announcing their arrival, Catherine MacLellan's fine songwriting talent and accomplished performance draws her listeners in with little effort, and without need of any persuasion. Silhouette is a reminder that Catherine's musicianship is unparalleled among performers of her generation.

Saturday, June 9, 2012 - SHAKLIN ROAD ($12 Advance / $15 day of show Show 9:00 PM)

Shanklin Road are a Country/Blue Grass trio that formed in 2006 with sisters Dawn Ellis and Joyce Miller. Formerly of the bluegrass group Blacks Mountain, they teamed up with good friend and long time band mate Lisa Bennett to create and deliver their own brand of country in stunning three part harmony.

The girls have accumulated many awards and accolades over the years including two charted singles, ECMA nominations and CCMA showcases. They have taken their live show extensively through the maritimes and performed at numerous festivals across Canada sharing the stage with the likes of Jason Blaine, The Nashville Bluegrass Band, Gordie Sampson and Jason McCoy just to name a few. One of their albums even made Stewart Fenwick's list of top ten albums for the year in "Country Music and Dance" magazine in Scotland.

Without question, live shows are their legacy. Performing is what makes them uniquely Shanklin Road. It's not only their blend of music and voice but the spontaneity of unrehearsed humorous antics and bantering between themselves that make every show a different and memorable experience. Spontaneity is as much fun for Shanklin Road as for the audiences they play for.

The girls are firm believers that every song on every album must be delivered with the passion and vigor for which it had been written and recorded. They treat every stage as a kitchen and every show a party. So as it's always been, they will continue to kick off their shoes and "let 'er rip". Must hear music, must see performances. Of course............. it's Shanklin Road!

Shanklin Road are currently recording their fifth album, third as Shanklin Road for a 2012 release.
